Dear colleague,
Due to a national budget reduction of £1.7 million for 2025/26, the national Knowledge and Library Services team at NHS England have had to take some challenging decisions regarding the National Core Content Collection contracts. A difficult decision has been taken to cancel contracts for some of the existing content.
Having reviewed usage figures, value for money, and the availability of content in each of the packages, as well as feedback from clinical stakeholders, the following will be removed from the national collection from the 1st July 2025:
ProQuest resources
AMED
British Nursing Index
Health Research Premium Collection
PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES
Oxford University Press (for Handbooks and Textbooks collection and Specialist Handbooks)
For the majority of these resources, there are alternative resources available which offer similar coverage:
AMED – try CINAHL (EBSCO databases) or EMCARE (Ovid databases)
British Nursing Index – use CINAHL (EBSCO databases)
Health Research Premium Collection – search Browzine to find journals from our subscriptions to the MAG Online Library or Wiley Medical & Nursing Collection – or use our article request form.
PsycARTICLES – Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection (EBSCO)
If you have a ProQuest My Research account, please log in before 30th June 2025 and download any saved searches you may have on your account. Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust library has created a fantastic quick little video on how to do this which you can watch at: BWC Quick Guides: Exporting copies of saved searches from PsycInfo (Proquest).
The usage statistics for the Oxford Handbooks, Textbooks and Specialist Handbooks online collections in Somerset is not high. Medical students from Bristol and Plymouth will continue to have online access to the online collections via their academic institution. We commit to purchasing print or electronic copies of any key Oxford Handbooks, and there are many other good introductory series available such as, ABC of, Crash Course, Lecture Notes in, which you can find via our Library Catalogue. Please send any book purchase suggestions to library@somersetft.nhs.uk and/or use our book request service.
We are currently investigating the possibility of purchasing a local subscription to PsycINFO, as it is an essential database for evidence in the mental health and psychological professions. In the meantime, we recommend searching: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL and Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection and Google Scholar. If you require assistance, please contact the Library team or request an evidence search.
