Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that is being viewed increasingly as an example of neurological and cognitive variation among people. It is clinically very heterogeneous. It is associated with disabilities and everyday challenges, but may also be associated with cognitive strengths and talents.
Autistic adults are inadequately supported in the workplace. This study sought a definition of 'reasonable' and explored facilitators and barriers to employers making reasonable adjustments. 98 employers and employees across a UK city completed a survey; 15% identified as being autistic.
HOW WELCOMING IS YOUR organization to neurodivergent employees, and how successful is it at engaging them?
The purpose of this paper is to give autistic employees a voice, evaluate their work-based experiences and to disseminate the relevant recommendations of the Westminster AchieveAbility Commission report.
This article examines 181 autistic adults' views toward, and experiences of, requesting and receiving workplace adjustments in the UK. Using an online survey, we collected both qualitative and quantitative data relating to individuals' experiences.
Judy Singer [[1]], a sociologist who has autism, coined the term "neurodiversity" (ND) in the late 1990s, introducing the concept that some developmental disorders may represent a variation of "normal". ND commonly refers to a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, autism spectrum conditions, attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and other unspecified conditions. The stigma around ND and its consequences can generate apprehension in both employees and employers, and this might potentially result in illegal actions which might otherwise have been avoided.
Autistic people experience more health conditions and earlier mortality. This study investigated views about a primary care health check for autistic adults to inform its design. Fifty-one people participated in consultation groups and interviews, comprising autistic adults (some with co-occurring intellectual disabilities), adults with intellectual disabilities, supporters and health professionals.
ADHD and autism spectrum disorder are conceptualised as discrete, categorical, neurodevelopmental disorders, which originate in early development 1 and are assumed to be the result of underlying brain dysfunction. 2 From one perspective, these definitions provide important clarity for clinical practice and ensure we are guided by research progress over the past 40 years. 3 By contrast, others have argued that alternative ways of thinking are needed.
In this episode of the Acas Podcast, we help demystify neurodiversity. Whether or not you're up to date with the language around neurodiversity, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, dyslexia and other terminology, most workplaces include people who think differently, and who might be part of a neurominority.
Here are a list of Podcasts related to autism, neurodiversity, employment, empowerment, and quality of life.
Our neurodiversity vision is for everyone at Berkshire Healthcare to recognise, understand and celebrate neurodiversity, and for all neurodivergent people working in, or using our services to be empowered and enabled to have equal access to effective services, support and fulfilling lives.
Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits.
15% – 20% of the world’s population is estimated to be neurodiverse, yet, for such a large proportion of people, they face widespread discrimination throughout almost every aspect of their lives, from cradle to grave.
As part of Neurodiversity Celebration Week 21-27 March 2022, Benjamin Ford discusses the importance of supporting neurodivergent colleagues in the NHS.
